This remarkably well preserved house, together with its historic setting, clearly evokes rural New England of the 18th and 19th century. The house was built in the late 18th century as a cooperage and is situated in the beautiful town of Roxbury, Connecticut. It is lovingly restored and fitted with all modern day conveniences.
The house is located on a dead end road which leads to Lake Lillionah and is surrounded by 5acres of woods and gardens with a swimming pool. The setting is extremely quit and peaceful, however restaurant and shopping are only 15 minutes away. Roxbury is approximately 80 miles from New York City and 130 miles from Boston. It is an ideal base for exploring New England and or trips to New York City and Boston.

The House
The History
The Daniel Gorham House was built around 1790 as a center chimney saltbox. The Gorham´s were traditionally coopers and built the house into the side of the hill so that the basement is on the level of the ground thus forming a work shop (today the library) where barrels were made. The fireplace in the library is shoulder high and wide enough to take large logs for sustained heat, since the barrel staves had to be steamed for shaping. The Gorham´s also made wagon-beds, running gear and plow stocks.
Today
Over the past 20 years the house has been lovingly restored. It has 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ bathrooms on approximately 2,700 square feet of living space.
On the main floor it has the original center chimney with a dinning room, living room, kitchen and half bath. All rooms are open around the kitchen and built the center of the house with access to a large terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens.
The second floor consists of two bedrooms one with another fireplace and a master bathroom. The floor still has the original wide floor boards from the 18th century.
On the ground level you will find a library and the large shoulder high fireplace, a sitting room with another bedroom and bathroom.
The house is furnished with antiques some period; it is fit with all modern day conveniences including a computer with internet access, television/cable, radios etc. The kitchen is completely stocked with cooking utensils for at least eight guests.
The property encompasses 5 acres of which approximately 2 acres are garden and the swimming pool; the other three are just woods. From the main floor there is access to the main terrace with a Bar-B-Que and seating for up to 10 people. There is as well a barn from 1804 which we currently use only for storage that boost a 1200 sq foot loft on the second floor (not finished). The swimming pool is located only steps away from the main terrace on top of a hill with stunning views and lots of privacy. There is another terrace at the pool with table and lounge chairs.
The Litchfield Hills & Roxbury
Northwestern Connecticut is known for its distinct and traditional New England scenery, which can stand in contrast to the rest of Connecticut, which is largely urbanized or suburbanized. Most of the region comprises forested hills and rocky peaks, with farmland and small towns interspersed in the valleys and plains. This region also plays host to a large portion of the state's small vineyard and wine industry.
Due to the rural feel of the area, the region is an extremely popular location for second homes, primarily with New York City residents. The hills are rural enough to offer an escape from city life, yet close enough (less than 90 miles) to visit on weekends. Many visitors also arrive in the autumn to witness the fall foliage, and to visit the region's many covered bridges or waterfalls.
Because of both its rural beauty and its relative proximity to New York City, the area has been and continues to be home to many famous or wealthy residents, including Mia Farrow, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Denis Leary, Kevin Bacon, and is also known as the Hamptons of Connecticut.
Roxbury is a picturesque and historic small town nestled in the northwest hills of Connecticut in Litchfield County. Its Indian name is "Shepaug," a Mohegan name signifying "rocky water." It was settled in 1713 as a part of Woodbury, which today lies to the east. A parish evolved in 1743 and in 1796 the town was incorporated, separating from Woodbury.
During the early and mid-1800's Roxbury was a farming town but had ten sawmills and five hat-making shops. The first mining operations began here in the mid-18th century in the hope of finding silver. A silver mine was opened here and was later found to contain spathic iron, specially adapted to steel making and a small smelting furnace was built. The abundance of granite found in many of Mine Hill's quarries provided the building material for the ore roaster and blast furnace, buildings throughout New England as well as for such world wonders as the Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central Station in New York City. The granite was transported by the Shepaug Railroad.
Garnet, now the State Mineral was also mined in Roxbury.
Today, Roxbury is a town of 2,340 residents and covers an area of 27 square miles with some famous residents including Arthur Miller, Alexander Calder, Frank McCourt, Stephen Sondheim and Richard Widmark. This rural town runs through the watershed of the Shepaug River.
Activities
At the house we can make available two mountain bikes, the potential riders should keep in mind that the Litchfield Hills are quite steep though. There is a large aluminum canoe and life vest in the barn that can be used; it is quite heavy though and is better transported by car to Lake Lillionah or the Shepaug River, which is a 10 minute walk from the house.
The Roxbury and Bridgewater Land trust have persevered thousands of acres in both towns which allows for beautiful hiking in and around town. Maps with descriptions of the trails are available at the house.
Roxbury has a swimming lake (five minute drive or 20 minute walk) with lifeguard that is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day which hardly ever anybody uses and which is only available to Roxbury residents. There are Tennis courts a 5 minute drive from the house which are free to use for Roxbury residents as well.
The region boosts any possible outdoor activity with many golf courses, canoeing at the Housatonic River and many more activities. In winter there are two smaller downhill ski slopes only minutes away and miles of trails for cross country skiing.
